Top Interview Tips – Summer Jobs
Jul 6, 2023
Thinking about finding a job over the summer to earn some extra money? These tips will help you to prepare.
Tip 1: Research the Company and Job Description
Researching the company beforehand will help you to feel confident in the first few minutes of your interview and will show that you have dedicated time to preparing.
You should familiarise yourself with things such as the company’s values, the main products and services it sells, and some history about the business. A great place to start is with their website, and also check any social media profiles to get a feel for what the company culture is like.
Tip 2: Practice Answering Typical Questions
Think about what typical questions you may be asked that would be relevant to the role. If you are customer-facing, there may be a question relating to how you would deal with a complaint.
Often, interviewers want to know what you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses; this question is asked to assess whether a candidate is self-aware. You should answer this honestly but try to focus on a weakness that would not be detrimental to the role.
For example, if you were applying for a role as a receptionist, you could share that you are not confident in delivering group presentations. You could follow this answer up with a way in which you are working on this weakness.
Tip 3: Prepare Questions to ask the Interviewer
Preparing questions to ask the interviewer could help you to stand out from other candidates, and shows that you are interested in knowing more about the job and the company.
Examples of good questions to ask the interviewer could be:
- What is a common challenge I may face in this role?
- What’s your favourite part about working for the company?
- What is the five-year plan for the business?
Tip 4: Dress to Impress
You know the saying – first impressions count! No matter what job you are interviewing for, you should dress professionally as this will demonstrate your professional approach to work.
Tip 5: Follow Up with an Email
After your interview, leave a lasting impression by sending up a follow email thanking the interviewers for their time. This also affirms your keen interest in the position, and eagerness to learn of the outcome of the interview.
Good luck, you’ve got this!
